at home with basic invite: making holiday cards 2018

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, holiday season will soon be in full swing. Stores already have their holiday decor out and advertised. Before we know it, Thanksgiving will be here and Christmas soon after. So, I thought I would try and get ahead of the holiday madness and get my Christmas cards done early!

This year, I chose to use the stationary retailer Basic Invite to create holiday cards for baby-cakes and myself. The process was easy. The hardest part about creating our holiday cards for this year was choosing from the vast selection of card designs available. I narrowed down my top choices, this was more short list of picks: one, two, three, four, five.

I really liked some of the many foil options available. You can see some of my favorite foil options here, here, and here. One can choose between gold, silver, and rose gold foil options. There is also the option to choose between flat or raised foil on all of Basic Invite’s foil designs. In the end, I did not choose a foil design because I fell in love with this design for displaying the photos I wanted to use.

There are five different finish options available. Signature Matte stock is thick (14pt thickness) matte paper with a smooth texture and classic white hues. Smooth Coated finish has a semi-gloss finish and is perfect for producing vibrant, rich colors. With a 13pt thickness, the Smooth Coated finish is FSC certified and made with 50% recycled content. The Premium Shimmer finish is pearl white with a smooth texture and will add subtle shine and glow to any stationary. The Luxe Velvet finish feels silky soft (like a touch of suede) front to back. Lastly, the Double Thick Matte finish is an ultra thick (20pt thickness) paper that features creamy white hues and a cotton texture, this is the top of the line finish. I chose to get half my cards in the Premium Shimmer finish and the other half in the Luxe Velvet finish. Personally, I preferred the Luxe Velvet finish over the Premium Shimmer finish because the photos were more clear. I would be very interested to see the Double Thick Matte finish in the future.

Basic Invite is one of the view stationary retailers that allows an almost unlimited color selection with instant previews online. Once you select the card design you like, you can change the color of each element on the card to over 180 different color options to customize the card to your exact wants. I personally loved this feature because I was able to coordinate the exact colors of our outfits and Christmas photos with the holiday card template I selected. In the end, I used more navy hues than a traditional evergreen color for my holiday cards and couldn’t be happier with how they turned out.

In addition to their large color selection for customizing holiday cards, Basic Invite has 40 different color options for their envelopes too! If one wants a more subtle color touch on their envelopes, they can opt for a color liner for their envelope like I did. All their envelopes are peel and seal too, which is great if you hate licking shut envelopes like I do.

Another awesome option that Basic Invite offers is custom samples. They are one of the few online stationary retailers that allows customers the ability to order a printed sample of their actual invitation so they can see exactly how it will print, and see the paper quality and texture, before they place a large order. I LOVED THIS FEATURE. Because, in reality, this feature allows for two things I really appreciate. One, I was able to print my holiday cards with two different finishes to see which one I liked better. And, two, this option makes it possible for a person to order the exact about of holiday cards they want. Personally, I do not need the 100 or 200 holiday cards that come in a standard order from other retailers. I like being able to order a specific and custom number that fits my needs.

I was super impressed with how fast my order was shipped out and delivered. I chose the free standard shipping option, it was said to take 7-10 business days to receive my order. And, if I recall correctly, I received my order in only three days. When you shop online at Basic Invite right now, you can use code holi30 and receive 30% off online holiday cards. With over 500 holiday card designs to choose from, they are a go-to for Christmas card ideas and creative Thanksgiving dinner invitations.

A big thank you to Basic Invite for sponsoring this post.

xoxo, alli
